Portfolio

Creating an online portfolio is a must in this industry, which is why I can't fathom why I never made time to put one together. But ATEC is offering a great class that is too good to miss and an online portfolio is required. So, what better time than now to finally put a few things together!

2D Work and 3D Renders

I contemplated throwing images onto this blog, but the layout would have been madness, and I also want to sustain the presence of my online portfolio. So I  just created an online portfolio of my 2d and 3d work through Deviant Art's new aptly-named portfolio creation site, portfolio.deviantart.com.  The site doesn't have the "deviant art" site look, which is GREAT.  So if you ever need to put together an online portfolio and you're in a jam, I recommend it!

One important thing to know: portfolio.deviantart.com doesn't support video, so use an alternate means of getting video reels out there.

3D Rigging

Showing a portfolio for 3D rigging can be a little different.  You can show an animation of your rig that demonstrates it doing some simple calisthenics, but the best way to put a rig to the test is to simply link the files so they can be tested out personally.  I haven't really figured the best way as of writing, but I'll find a way to post a few Maya files somehow.

In the meantime, here's a calisthenics video of a rig that I did last year (I can't take credit for creating the models, though - they were supplied to me in class. I intend to find out who created them so I can give them proper credit.)

Animation

 If you're in the position where you need to show animation, try using Youtube or (even better) Vimeo.

Vimeo is better suited for finished high quality work, which I concede I don't have... yet.  So, uploaded some of my animated work onto Youtube, instead. Thankfully, blogger supports video. The videos below are a few recent animations I've done:

Final Thoughts

Access to a digital soapbox is incredibly easy and is a MUST for artists of all disciplines. There's really no excuse to not have an online presence to showcase your work, especially given the vast amounts of avenues available.

All you need is a little bit of time, and a heavy hand for editing what not to put in (especially if you have a lot of work to show.)
